On Sunday I took my little boy to a birds of prey show at Green Chimneys. He thought a chicken and tortoise were a lot more interesting, but I had fun. In addition to the raptors there were three red kangaroos, a porcupine, several lemurs, an owl monkey named Abu, a few snakes, two red footed tortoises, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and a fancy chicken with a poofy head. Oh, and of course the resident peacock!
Birds or prey are among my favorite subjects to shoot. They are regal, powerful, and downright beautiful. Falconry is the oldest sport in the world and the Ancient Egyptians were the first to practice it! Any day I get to be among these magnificent animals is a good one. Maybe next year Dante will understand. 🙂
Unfortunately the backgrounds and lighting at these shows aren’t the best to work with and I won’t use flash around the birds or really, most animals. Despite the challenging lighting I did manage to get a few decent shots in, so here they are:
